You Look Okay To Me

WHY ARE WE HERE?

So … here we are.

This isn't where I thought I’d be, I won’t lie to you. I had lots of ideas about what my life would be like at this point. The things I thought I’d have. Things I assumed I’d have.

I didn’t think I’d have some sort of ‘disease’ that would make everything this awkward. (p.1)

We are here because I  am very ill. I’ve done a lot of researching and writing and thinking and I’ve written the first version of a show based around my experiences of chronic illness.

I wanted the show to be intimate and absurd and visceral and touching. I wanted to create an insight into the experience of chronic illness with all its impossible contradictions and unpredictability. Reproducing a sense of interruption was particularly important to me. My show was very much written in my own voice and based on my own experiences living with a chronic illness. It seems only right that my documentation emulates the conversational albeit chaotic form of my show.

My show is intended for those who might share in my experience and also for those whose lives have never been interrupted by illness. Maybe they could consider what that interruption feels like. My final performance didn’t follow a linear story but exists as a collage of scenes that blend into each other. I wanted to create a messy portrayal of illness that is at times disorientating and interrupts itself, mimicking the unpredictability of my own life.

What's happening

Let's navigate our way through this mess

Chris Thorpe on The Shape of the Pain

“it’s about if we can ever communicate the state of ourselves, the impossibilities and compromises that involves, and the reasons we even try.”

HOW THIS SITE WORKS:

This site is made up of seven sections. Five main sections document the development of my show, then there's the Easter Egg section that contains writing that didn’t make it into the show and the Blog section where anyone can leave a comment in response to my work. The first five sections will include: excerpts from my show and other shows that inspired my work, some of my journal entries, videos and photos from the development process, audio excerpts of the show and my reflections on my performance.
